Fluids and Patterns

Introduction

In this demonstration, students will observe the patterns that occur when a mixture is made.

Usually you can't see the small whirls and eddies in the motion of a liquid. The sparkly particles in the detergent help you to see where the solution is moving. Pearl Essence is actually made from fish scales. The small shiny crystals are extracted from the scales of herring. Pearl Essence is added to soaps, shampoos, and cosmetics to make them look prettier.

This is a recommended post-visit activity for a field trip to Science World at TELUS World of Science. It is related to the Kalliroscope exhibit in Eureka!.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Investigate the interactions of liquids and solids.
  • Observe the properties of a mixture.
